Since the beginning of the 1930s, each painter has been expected a large picture associated with the successes of socialist construction. In 1934, Lizak received an order of the Leningrad City Council on the “First Exhibition of Leningrad Artists”. Working in the workshops of the Baltic Plant and the Krasny Vyborzhets plant, Lizak wrote portraits of drummers – steelmits and blacksmiths – and interiors of the workshops of factories. The picture was never written, but numerous studies for it are perceived by completely finished works. In the portrait of Stalev Krylov, as in other similar studies, typical and individual, interacting, are melted into a certain sum of psychological qualities: determination, compilation, seriousness. Static, monumentality, representativeness of the image cannot hide the undoubtedly expressed personal beginning of the portrait. Nevertheless, the special heroization of the worker testifies to the artist’s respect for a person of labor than the disclosure of the character or psychology of the model. (A. L.).
