Subject "Bathing horses" arose in the work of Plastov in an early youth, during the period of study at the sculptural workshop of the Stroganov school, as the desire to reflect their own understanding by means of painting "wild spontaneous strength". In the process of working on the picture, the material collected previously was supplemented by a series of field studies written in the picturesque foothills of the Caucasus, during a special business trip to one of the parts of the 12th Caucasian division. As a result, on a huge canvas, naked male bodies arose, sparkling shiny cereals of horses in reflexes, transparent shadows and glare, the life -giving element of water and the sun. These are invincible, immortal, forever young heroes, in the direct, “antique” sense of the word, merrily rule over the world and fate. The picture is perceived as a single emotional note of the genuine joy of perception of a momentary life.
